OUR HISTORY 1949In 1949, Yasutaro and Kumiko (Kate) Yoshihara started a small fruit and flower stand in front of their vegetable farm.  Originally from California, the Yoshihara's and their small children were taken to Colorado and held in a Japanese Relocation Camp during World War II.  After being released from the camp, the Yoshihara's decided to stay in Colorado and try their hand at entrepreneurship.

The second generation owners, Gene and Evelyn Yoshihara took over in 1960.  They built a new flower shop in the same location at 600 South Public Road in Lafayette.  The vegetable farm was replaced by modern greenhouse facilities and Lafayette Florist became major cut flower producers.

Today, the third generation runs Lafayette Florist.  The Yoshihara’s daughter, Lori Wheat is the merchandise and marketing director.  Lori’s husband, Brian, is chief executive officer.  Another daughter, Sandi Yoshihara-Sniff, is florist manager.  Her husband, Craig Sniff is head grower.

OUR HISTORY 1980Lafayette Florist has come a long way from its mom-and-pop roots.  The staff now numbers 40 employees, and the business includes a two-floor gift showroom and 70,000 square foot garden center.

With over 50 years in the same location, the floral operation is thriving.  Lafayette Florist was named the first recipient of the 2003 Retail Florist of the Year Award, a national honor sponsored by floral industry organizations.  The Yoshihara family was also honored by the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, recognized for continuing the pioneering spirit of Japanese American family-run businesses which have been passed down through three generations.

The Lafayette Florist family believes they’ve been successful because of their shared values, loyalty, pride of the business and cohesiveness.  Their vision to contribute to the community, as well as to the local economy keeps them focused on providing flowers and plants for all needs.
